My wife's RX300 is a great car (still going fine after 10 years), but the remotes are made of terrible quality plastic. I would imagine any Lexus owner with a vehicle that is approaching 10 years or older will have the same issue, because the plastic just seems to have degraded and become brittle.

Anyway, I ordered two of these "blanks." Once they came in the mail, I went down to my local Lexus dealer here in Austin and they made me two copies for $14 each. They even had a nice waiting area with a sort of bar with fancy drinks and snacks. Ten minutes later I walked out with 2 new keys, cookies, peanuts, and a couple of Italian sodas ... not a bad deal.

Next, I went home and removede the electronic "guts" from the old keys. The new key blanks include a small screwdriver that you can use to remove the screw to get to the key "guts", although I preferred to use my own little jewler's style screwdriver. I transferred the internals to the new keys, and everything fit like a glove.

So I am up and running now with two new keys that cost me a grand total of less than $50, and a little bit of my time. The new key blanks seem very sturdy, and I wouldn't be surprised if they will last longer than the originals did.

One final benefit - the original keys (now without the internal electronics) make great spares; you can wire one up in a secret location on your car, and if you lock yourself out of your car you'll have a spare and will be good to go.
