You are supposed to loop the cable through the D rings on your chin strap and THEN the cable would be long enough... however, I open my face shield and loop it around the face guard, so the cable is a little short. For quick trips, its not a problem. I lock it to my seat strap or luggage - just having the lock showing is deterrent enough. For real security, I'd have to lock it around the frame somewhere and that would take some time.
