Remote keys including Toyota keys today have two microchips: 1st chip is larger and sits on the inside of the shell that you can see when you open the key shell. This 1st chip is to open door locks and the trunk. The 2nd chip is much smaller (you can't usually see it as it is glued on the inside of the key) and is used to start the ignition. Both chips have to be programmed by the dealer or an authorized locksmith (both will charge you an arm and a leg to program the 2 chips). I had lost the buttons on my old key while replacing the battery and thought I could buy the shell, put the old bigger chip (1st chip) inside the new key shell and cut the keys at Home Depot or some other automatic key cutting service. What I didn't know, and the seller's product description did not mention, was that there is a 2nd much smaller chip that cannot be removed from the old key to the new key shell that I was purchasing. Since this smaller chip is glued to one side on the inside of my old key and could not be removed, I had to go and pay a locksmith to buy the 2nd chip and get it programmed. Since the metal part of my old key was in tact, I ended up only replacing the 4 lost buttons on my old key with buttons from the new key shell, used my existing 1st larger chip, buy a new 2nd chip, get the 2nd chip programmed and installed thru an authorized locksmith. Bottom line, this key shell sold by nj365, even if the key is cut correctly and even if you have the larger 1st chip, will not start your car, since the smaller 2nd chip (that starts the ignition) has to be bought, installed and programmed by an authorized locksmith.
